Gift Ideas for the Christmas Season!

One of my favorite Christmas songs is the Twelve Days of Christmas. Mostly because I'll always remember my sweet grandpa mixing up some of the words, singing "Three Hench Fens" and not realizing it :)

promised to curate some gift collections that included some handmade items by local businesses.
I used Polyvore to create idea boards which (of course) center around color schemes. You might already be done with shopping but I had fun looking at local vendors like Canopy Skincare, Be Hippy, and Twigs & Treen for special finds and then collaging them together.
Here's how they turned out.

Each collection also includes items that are less expensive things you'd find at a department store or online. Remember my mission for "Shopping Small for All" is about being sincere in our shopping experience, not rushed or extravagant. Finding ways to enjoy all aspects of the giving of the Holidays, and sometimes that does mean we need an easy-to-find item to go along with our special handmade gifts.

I hope you all enjoy your Christmas!

My favorite quote to remember the reason for the season:
"Love came to show us the way"

Shopping Small for All

Hi friends!

When did November arrive? O like 20 days ago, I should have known since my birthday was in there somewhere. Well that means we're speeding along at maximum velocity towards the Christmas Holiday. I've met some awesome shoppers lately who've taken a challenge to "Shop Small for All" their gifts, this has inspired me to think differently not only about what we shop for but how we shop.

What I like about this idea of shopping small is, of course, that it benefits small businesses, like me, who are standing on tip toe behind the big buck retailers trying to be heard over the glutinous Black Friday sales and flashing neon "Open All Night" signs. Having worked in retail for the past 7-ish years I've come to expect being stressed this time of year. Buckling down for prickly customers, long hours, and lots of glittery broken ornaments. If i never see glitter again...

I'm trying very consciously this year to take time to enjoy the season by going "small". I've actually written time into my schedule to go shopping just to look, to see the seasonal decorations, enjoy the sights and scents, and be inspired by what others have to offer without feeling compelled to buy buy buy! When it snows I've vowed to stop what I'm doing for a moment, get bundled up warm, and take a walk. Take time to set up the tree, try some new recipes (and the classics), and have Game Night with the family.

It's a struggle to not be consumed by consumerism. There is nothing wrong with buying things... but it can become a more fulfilling experience when we try to value the whole process; the person who designed and made it, the work that goes into selling it, the excitement of finding it, the accomplishment of wrapping, and the enjoyment of opening, the gratitude of receiving.

While we can value the act of gift giving we can also be conscious that it's not the only thing we are giving. When you shop small you are giving a meaningful gift to your loved one and also giving back to the artist or maker who created that item, which is especially impactful on your direct community when it's a local artisan. It benefits us "All".

I have made a small, but meaningful, list for each of my loved ones and by shopping at holiday handmade markets, on Etsy, and at independently owned shops I'm sure this time I will enjoy the shopping experience as much as they will enjoy the opening part!

So to inspire you to find special gifts I'll be posting new ideas every day on Instagram and Polyvore. These will be complete gift package ideas: all the things you need for a best friend, a recently engaged gal pal, your precious momma, beautiful teenage cousin. I will be consciously including some of my fellow Firefly and Sugar Plum makers as well as some less expensive items from other retailers.

To start off here's a favorite color scheme of the moment: Deep Forest Greens with some new earrings of mine that I would love to wear all day, every day!

All local Boulder Small Businesses. Pair these with a chunky sweater, a cute branch coat rack, and a fresh pine scented candle for a complete gift for the Nature Lover on your list.

Botanical Garden Holiday Sale!

I haven't posted in a bit-- I've been busy getting prepared for this weeks upcoming market at the Denver Botanical Gardens!!

Thursday, Nov 13 from 5-8 pm will be a preview party
*tickets are $15 and enjoy snacks and drinks while you shop
then
Friday and Saturday, Nov 14&15th from 9am- 5pm
will both be FREE days at the Gardens!!

Despite the sudden chill in the weather here in Colorado, this will be a great opportunity to see the Botanical Gardens and the fabulous Dale Chihuly art glass exhibit! In fact, it's the last chance to see this exhibit in Colorado. AND if you are dreading the cold, just know that most of the sale is indoors along with the best selection of flowers and tropical plants. Brave the cold with a hot chocolate to see the artwork, especially when it's lit up at night!

Here's a couple of my favorite pieces:

The Holiday Sale will feature 50+ vendors of handmade local gifts and goods, including me! I'm thrilled to be in this special event surrounded by cool flowering plants and mind-blowing art glass. I visited the Botanic Gardens for the first time this summer and can't decide if I take more photos of the crazy art or the crazy tropical fish and flowers.

Around the World Blog Hop

I used to love hopscotch in elementary school!

Today's blog post reminds me a little of the playground; skip through the numbers and tag the next person in line. I've been nominated to participate in a blog hop! So I answer some questions and pass it on.

This "Around the World" blog hop has been traveling through the blogosphere between crafters, artisans, and makers. I was nominated by my mom, Anne Deister, of Spring Leaf Studios. She is a quilter and pattern designer and my favorite, lovely, creative, and supportive mamma. Her constant design sensibility and unique style is always inspiring me. She's helped me so much to launch my business this year and design displays for my booth.

On the way home from Quilt Market 2013

Here's the questionnaire:
#1 What am I working on?
I'm currently working on designing stud earrings. While I love wearing dangly earrings,
especially these newest ones, I find it more comfortable to wear studs while wearing a strong statement necklace. Since a lot of my necklaces have a very circular central theme, I see a need for earrings that match in some subtle way without being too similar. I also just love love love to bezel set gemstones so I'm looking at ways of incorporating some of my favorite stones.

#2 How does my work differ from others in its genre?
I work really hard to differentiate myself in the jewelry market. From quality handmade artisan jewelry to plastic mass-manufactured cheapo stuff, there is a lot out there. I've never been a person who's into fashion "trends" whether it's Ugg boots or charm bracelets, so I don't often find inspiration in existing jewelry.

I hope my jewelry differs in my design work. My current line of jewelry at Emily Claire Studio is based in design elements of harmony, continuous line, and emphasis. The main jewelry element of my necklaces is a circle or hoop of hammered sterling silver. Inside this circle is where you'll find detail, emphasis, color, texture, and even symbolic meaning in the properties of the gemstones inside. I strive to make these necklaces unique and expressive. I think Emily Claire Studio differs from a lot of trends in jewelry towards chevrons, ethnic themes, neutral colors, base metals. I like color, balance, natural stones, and the white beauty of bright silver.

#3 Why do I create what I do?
The hardest question for me. Why? IDK! Just cause! Just cause I love it. I love to make things from scratch with my hands and think about how parts will fit together. I love to use torches and hammers and power tools and I'd even say I love to see my fingers all dirty and scraped up from the effort. I love to see a piece come all the way together. Most of all I love to see my booth set up, my jewelry in the case at a shop, or my work in a gallery.

#4 How does my creative process work?
In my current line of jewelry at Emily Claire Studio my creative process is a circular one, fitting to the designs themselves. Within this body of work I try to create pieces that compliment one another. I try to push the edges of what this circular jewelry element can be, from small and delicate, to bold and statement-making. So my creative process comes right out of the jewelry, I'm always sketching new ideas, new colors. In particular, the piece below reminds me of ripples in the water. Walking along the creek when the water stands perfectly still and a single drop causes so much disturbance on the surface-- how far can one drop ripple outward when uninhibited? I hope my business will continue to ripple outward too.

In other art forms that I play with, like mixed media and photography, my creative process often comes from finding or creating a hidden element. I love to involve or elude to a story in my mixed media work, or include subtle details in my photography. I love that one element that will hook you further once you've noticed it.

and one last question I'm adding to the list:
#5 What are your dreams for your work?
My dream for Emily Claire Studio is to establish a strong sense of my style. I want to really define and expand upon the Emily Claire look. I hope to do this in the coming year by flushing out the line with new designs, taking more stylistic photos, creating look books, and putting the finishing touches on my booth display. Above all my dream is to be recognizable-- to hear people start to know my name and associate it with my jewelry is a headwind in my sails.

So now it's my turn to tag a few fellow bloggers!
I reached out to several of my fellow Fireflies and favorite artists and a lot of you were on vacation so  some tag-ees may be added in the near future!

For now I'd like to nominate the fantastically talented Ashley Weber of Against the Grain. Although I've not had the chance to meet her in person I've been following her Instagram and instantly my metalsmith heart was all a flutter. Her jewelry speaks of nature; from cut-outs to gemstones to mixed media images and text, you know she finds her inspiration outdoors. Her designs are balanced and meaningful, they keep you looking. So well-crafted, and her blog-- so poetic. You can follow her blog here, instagram here, and shop here

www.ashleyweber.com

If no one has nominated you yet, that's ok! Join in the Blog Hop by copying the questions
I've answered here about your own creative endeavors, whatever they may be! If you're a painter,
a writer, a candlestick maker.

We are all connected by the creative work we do and the need to make beauty around us.
Playing together :)

Minty Inspiration (with a pinch of turquoise)

One of the most popular colors in fashion and interiors right now is Mint.
One my favorite gemstones to use is a minty shade of turquoise.

Emily Claire Studio jewelry available on Etsy

It's always been an inspiring color for me. From natural gemstones to the shades of teal along the shoreline at the beach, mint/turquoise is all around us.

Mint is such an easy color to bring to our lives.
Paint an accent wall or throw on some fun Converse. It sits somewhere between bold and feminine.

My favorite minty thing would have to be Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream! O yes! And no one better than Em's Ice Cream (a fellow Firefly vendor who I'm always keeping an eye on-- and organic too)

What a wonderful summer I've had! I've been reflecting on all that I accomplished; kick-starting my business, getting into shows and shops, traveling, and enjoying time at home with loved ones. I'm so thankful for these opportunities. Now it's time to welcome the fall and throw on one of my favorite color combos (my kitties stole the gloves that matched).

Fall Firefly Market

Ahh the leaves are changing!

G Dan Mitchell Photography
I always have that resistance to letting go of summer but, when you see those golden autumn hues
come out and collect around your feet, it reminds me that change is good too.

One big change that happened this year for me was going from being a visitor and shopper at the Firefly Handmade Markets in Boulder, to being a vendor. I'm so excited to participate in this weekend's Fall Market!!

It will be a lovely Fall day to be outside, enjoying artwork and handmade fabulousness, including some brews and ice cream. And don't forget 10% of your purchase of Emily Claire Studio at Firefly market will go to the kitties of Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue.

Come visit my booth and see my colorful new jewelry!

I was honored to be featured on the Firefly blog earlier this month. You can check out the post below by clicking here and scrolling down to Sept. 16th.

Some fellow vendors I'm looking forward to seeing:

  • What We Love Winery ~ they'll be right next door to me! I can't wait to try their tasty wine.
  • Urban Octopus ~ screen printed prints and shirts. My boyfriend loves these quirky designs.
  • Elke ~ a beloved Boulderite who handcrafts unique leather bags

Furry, Fuzzy, and Loved

Did I tell you I love cats?
Wow I'm almost embarrassed by how much I love cats... but I can't help it!

Here's my two loves:
Leo on a safari hunt
Opal checking box sizes

Mom picked them up at the grocery store and surprised us all. They each have an individual loving personality. Leo, the boy, is a shy sweetheart who loves to cuddle and stare at you. Opal, the girl, loves to follow me around and is always, ALWAYS ready to play.

We've had a cat since I was little. I grew up with Shadow, whom we just called Kitty. She lived for fifteen years with us. My favorite memory of her is looking down the bed in the dark to see her sweet outline sitting in my lap, keeping me warm and safe all night. <3

My love for furry creatures expands to all animals. Wasn't it one of our original purposes on this earth to care for the animals?

I'm happy to say that now 10% your market purchase of Emily Claire Studio jewelry goes to The Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue to help care for rescued and abandoned kittens and cats!

I'm excited to make monthly donations after each market event; I started earlier this September.

10% of each purchase from each market event will go to the RMFR. So be sure to visit my booth at the upcoming Firefly Handmade Market in Boulder and French Nest Market in Fort Collins. Check my website calendar for event locations and times.

Some ways you can care for and appreciate animal life:
  • adopt an abandoned, older animal who needs reminding of what love is
  • adopt a baby animal and provide a happy, healthy life
  • go searching for wildlife on a hike and appreciate what you come across whether it's a duck or a snake or a deer, but...
  • give them their space (and keep dogs on leashes so they also give wildlife their space)
  • pick up litter when you're outdoors-- especially plastic that animals can choke on
  • donate to a shelter or animal hospital
  • volunteer at the local shelter or humane society

The Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue provides a safe and happy (no-kill) home for kittens and cats who need help the most. I love that this non-profit is truly dedicated to making sure their residents are enjoying life beyond having a home. The cats are free to walk around the house and yard, not kept in cages or boxes. They provide care for cats of all ages and health, even those with terminal illness (and who are most in need of a loving home for the rest of their days).

How about a black cat for Halloween? This is Gizmo Gremlin at RMFR.

What's great about the RMFR is that you can make monetary donations (which are needed of course to keep the lights on and the electricity going) but you can also make material donations of cat toys, food, litter, treats, etc. A list of items they need can be found here. Those items are used daily by the cats so you can know that your donation is affecting their lives directly.

So sweet. This is Melo at RMFR.

I'm really happy to donate to the Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue to help ensure more kitties than just my own are safely cared for. I've been trying out new cat toy designs on Opal and Leo... this happens in about a day or two. I'm hoping to find a way to make stronger toys and donate some for the holidays.

I also want to recommend this book, The Soul of All Living Creatures, by Vinta Virga. It's a sweet book about the heartfelt connections between animals and people-- why we are so important to one another.

Be kind to an animal today <3

Mr. Leo. What a hunk.
